stupeflip - ère mystère
In April 2020, the french rap band Stupeflip organizes a contest for its fans : imagining the cover of their next album. Making this project was a challenge since it meant mixing 2D and 3D while trying to create an original piece that reflected their universe and art style as best as possible.
After gathering references from their previous album covers and their music clips, a dozen very basic sketches were made to convey the idea and mood of the illustration. The chosen sketch was then taken into Blender to lay out a solid 3D base to work from, which was then modified a bit to add depth and improve composition. Rendering the scene with a simple material / light / volumetrics setup and compositing the result helped lay a solid foundation for the painting process that followed in Photoshop.
“Poppip” [originally spelled “Pop-Hip”] is one of Stupeflip’s imaginary characters.
